With the weather turning beautiful, I\u2019m getting Yard Sale fever! Here are some tips I\u2019ve learned from my years of \u201cYard Sailing\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cYard-Sailing\u201d. <\/strong>
\nIt\u2019s the preferred weekend pastime of the Optimistic Cheapskate!\u00a0 You never know<\/em> what you\u2019ll find in a morning\u2019s worth of Yard Sailing \u2013 heck, sometimes you\u2019ll come home empty-handed \u2013 but your inner optimist will pull you out of bed time and time again for another coffee-fueled expedition.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been yard-sailing religiously since I was 11, heading out on my bike out early Saturday mornings with my backpack and $2 weekly allowance.\u00a0 I was forced to stretch that $2 to the max \u2013 and so I did \u2013 charming old folks out of their vintage clothes & jewelry (I have a vintage problem\u2026) and talking tight-fisted children out of Barbie collections.<\/p>\n

In my adult life, I\u2019ve clothed myself and my family with yard sale finds, furnished parts of my home, and even stocked my Gift-Closet with yard sale treasures.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a little green to yard-sailing, or maybe just rusty, here are some tips I\u2019ve learned to help you make the most of a Saturday morning!<\/p>\n

Before You Begin: Chart Your Course <\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

With the rise in gas prices, yard-sailing has become a more expensive pastime than in years gone by.\u00a0 The only way to sail the subdivisions without spending a fortune is to map out your route ahead of time.\u00a0 How?\u00a0 If you\u2019re a serious couponer \u2013 you know that a good plan can make ALL the difference.\u00a0 Everyone has their own method, but here\u2019s mine:
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n
    \n
  1. Buy a paper as you head out OR check the local newspaper online *My favorite option<\/li>\n
  2. Print out the list and mark the ones you REALLY want to hit<\/li>\n
  3. Group together sales that are near each other, so you can see what area of town has the most bang for your gas buck<\/li>\n
  4. Finally, chart an efficient path to hit the sales you most want to visit<\/li>\n
  5. Don\u2019t recognize the road? Mapquest it!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    After charting a course for your treasure-hunt, it\u2019s time to get down to business.\u00a0 Here are several tips and tricks I\u2019ve learned to get what you want and pay what you want.<\/p>\n

    \u2600YARD SALE TIPS\u2600<\/h2>\n

    \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    1)<\/strong> If at all possible, go the first day of the sale<\/strong>
    \nThat\u2019s when most of the treasures will disappear quickly.\u00a0 I mean REALLY quickly.\u00a0 Like 6 am.<\/p>\n

    2)<\/strong> If you can\u2019t make it early<\/em>, make it late<\/em><\/strong>
    \nOn the last day of a sale, when the homeowners have been sitting in the sun haggling over prices for too many hours, they\u2019ll likely take whatever you\u2019re willing to offer to avoid hauling everything back inside.\u00a0 I\u2019ve gotten many things totally free by showing up after 12.<\/p>\n

    3) Friendly Small-Talk Pays Off! <\/strong>
    \nOn your way up the drive, wave and smile!\u00a0 \u00a0 Chat about the weather. Ask if they\u2019ve done well so far. Sellers are MUCH more willing to cut a deal when you\u2019ve been friendly \u2013 silent strangers don\u2019t engender much generosity.<\/p>\n

    4)<\/strong> Narrow Down Your Options:<\/strong><\/div>\n

    When you\u2019re strapped for time\/gas money \u2013 search for these: Neighborhood\/Subdivision Yard Sales, Church Rummage Sales, or School Sales.\u00a0 These will yield the biggest selection of stuff, with the least amount of driving around.\u00a0 Plus, church yard sales are VERY CHEAP!!!<\/p>\n

    5)<\/strong> Carry small bills and change<\/strong>:
    \nAlthough it\u2019s no crime to talk someone down from $5 to $2 for a cute set of dishes, it will hurt their feelings when you brandish your crisp $20 bill to pay for it.\u00a0 It\u2019s just bad form, sailor!<\/p>\n

    6) Buy in Bulk<\/strong>.
    \nWhen you\u2019ve picked out an armful of items you can often get the seller to give you a multi-item discount.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve got $10 worth of t-shirts in your arms, you should definitely ask \u201cWill you take $7 for all these?\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019d be surprised at how many times the answer is \u201cSure!\u201d<\/p>\n

    7) Big-Ticket-Item Strategy:<\/strong>
    \nMrs. Smith was very attached to her old couch.\u00a0 She needs to sell it, but her memories won\u2019t let it go cheaply.\u00a0 But she\u2019s asking $200 \u2013 Argghh!!!\u00a0 You really, really NEED a couch, but what can you do?\u00a0 See the following protocol for \u201cBig Ticket\u201d haggling\u2026.<\/p>\n

    \u272d\u201dThe Haggle\u201d:\u00a0 Ask if she would take $100 for the couch.\u00a0 Notice aloud that there are a few stains and a rip on the side, even murmur a \u201cHmmm, I don\u2019t know\u2026\u201d or two while circling the couch.\u00a0 She still won\u2019t budge on the price?\u00a0 Well, either try to meet her halfway (between your offer and her price) or it\u2019s time to stage\u2026.<\/p>\n

    \u272d\u201dThe Walkaway\u201d:\u00a0 In order to be a good bargaineer, you have to be willing to walk away. I suggest walking slowly, with wistful backwards glances thrown in.\u00a0 In my experience, this will yield a \u201cshout-out\u201d 60% of the time.\u00a0 For instance they might say, \u201cYou know, if you really want that I\u2019ll take $$!!\u201d\u00a0 or \u201cTell you what, give me $$$ and it\u2019s yours!\u201d
    \nOf course, if they don\u2019t call out, and you\u2019re not ready to give up hope \u2013 just pretend you were walking to your car for pen and paper so that you could do this\u2026<\/p>\n

    \u272dThe \u201cHere\u2019s My Number\u201d:\u00a0 If a yard sale is still in progress, and Mrs. Smith is still holding out hope to sell her beloved couch for $200, she\u2019s not likely to go down on the price.\u00a0 However, there is one more chance to get what you want.\u00a0 Give her your phone number and tell her why you need the item.\u00a0 I know, this sounds corny, but it works.\u00a0 For instance: \u201cListen, I really <\/em>love this couch, but I honestly can\u2019t afford what you\u2019re asking.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t end up selling it, I can offer you $50.\u00a0 I know that\u2019s not what you\u2019re hoping for, but we really need a new couch and I love it so much I couldn\u2019t leave without trying!\u201d\u00a0 We got our whole living room set totally free that way.<\/p>\n

    (NOTE<\/strong>: I\u2019m not suggesting in the least that you lie to get something you want \u2013 when I got my couches for free, I truly could only offer the seller $50 for them.\u00a0 A bargain is no bargain at all if it costs your integrity!)<\/p>\n

    I hope some of these tips might prove helpful as Yard-Sale season sets in.\u00a0 Most importantly, you should enjoy the adventure \u2013 and if you\u2019re trying to save money, avoid buying \u201cStuff\u201d just because it\u2019s cheap. \u00a0 With your map in your pocket, hot coffee in your thermos, and a hopeful spirit- you\u2019ll be ready to sail through a sea of subdivisions!<\/em><\/p>\n
